Job Description We are looking to hire an experienced maintenance technician reporting to the Test Bay Maintenance Lead. The Maintenance Technician role at the John Crane Slough production facility is a critical position focused on ensuring the efficient operation of gas seal test rigs and associated plant equipment. This permanent position involves both planned and reactive maintenance, troubleshooting, and diagnostics of PLC/HMI control systems to optimise performance and minimise downtime. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate maintenance logs, supervising on-site contractors, coordinating with vendors for specialised repairs, and supporting other maintenance activities as needed. Additionally, the role contributes to process improvement through SES (Smiths Excellence System) initiatives, assists in equipment commissioning and validation, and ensures compliance with health, safety, and quality standards. Ideal candidates will bring experience with CMMS software, a proactive problem-solving approach, and the flexibility to manage occasional on-call work for urgent operational needs. Duties & Responsibilities (not limited to) Maintain gas seal production test rigs and associated plant and equipment. Perform both planned and reactive maintenance activities in a safe, timely, and efficient manner. Assist in the validation and commissioning of new and existing equipment. Experience with CMMS software. Troubleshoot / diagnose PLC/HMI control systems. Keep accurate maintenance logs, including work orders, maintenance tasks, and inventory usage. Provide first line supervision to on-site contractor’s activities. Support other onsite maintenance work when required. Support and drive SES (Smiths Excellence system) activities within the area. Attend and fully participate in training and appraisal activities as required. Coordinate with external vendors for specialised repairs or installations when necessary. Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and supplies, placing orders as needed. Develop and update standard operating procedures for maintenance tasks. Be available for weekend or on-call work as required to address urgent maintenance issues or support critical operations. Qualifications Proven experience as a maintenance technician or similar role. Strong technical skills in diagnosing and repairing industrial machinery. Experienced in reading technical, drawings and fault diagnoses. Experienced in supervising contractors and their activities on site. Ensure their appropriate documentation and permits are valid and correct. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively. Proficient in maintenance software and MS Office. Familiar with operational / shop floor best practices and performance standards. Decision making ability and good influencing / team working skills. Time management and organisational skills. Self-driven with good attention to detail.
